The Street recommends OnLive as a Google acquisition target

The Street ran an interesting opinion article that put OnLive atop a list of potential acquisition targets for Google.  The Street puts forth an interesting argument that describes Google’s need to keep pace with Facebook and the gaping hole in gaming that Google has left open in its product line.  Now the Google crew has the cash for sure at $37 billion and The Street recommends OnLive as a target based on two core points.  The acquisition would lead Google deeper into the gaming and social gaming sector, and second, OnLive would strengthen Google’s cloud based initiatives and products.  And, imagine OnLive gaming integrated into the Chrome browser where you could play your favorite games on your PC through the power of Google’s massive data centers.  Super speed!

Onlive latency passes the speed test

The EuroGamer Digital Foundry folks have put to rest the critics who were concerned about latency with the Onlive gaming system with a speed test.  Their latency testing scenario was extensive and covers the USA released titles using optimum controller setup.  The tests were part of an analysis of the overall platform that is soon to be released.  While the tests come up short of claims made by Mr Pearlman the results are still impressive and ensure that the system can handle whatever you might to throw at it.  onlive fans in the UK will be happy to hear that the recently announced partnership with British Telecom will add data centers and capacity that will optimize latency for its subscribers.

Check out the full story here including video of the results.

5.1 Surround Sound Comes to OnLive Gaming

Onlive surround soundGamers love big sound period.   And, OnLive brings it with the addition of 5.1 surround sound to its $99 console’s capabilities.  Big booming bass, sounds bouncing off the walls, people creeping up from behind are all headed your way.  The best Onlive games like, BorderlandsMafia IIAssassin’s Creed II and Batman: Arkham Asylum will carry 5.1 surround sound capabilities.

According to the Onlive website, the 5.1 surround sound encoding is a perfect fit with cloud based gaming because it “encodes surround sound audio in real-time without delay.”  You can experience great sound through your OnLive console even if you do not have surround sound capabilities but if you are one of the lucky ones who have a surround sound set up you can get detailed installation  instructions from the people at Onlive here

Its enough to make you say… turn it up!

Onlive Gaming on the iPad and Android on the go

The folks at Onlive Gaming announced a pair of apps that someday soon are going to let us all take our games on the go!  The apps are available for the iPad and Android operating systems and the best part is… they’re free!

In the initial versions you’ll be able to view gameplay and chime in or rate players “Brag Clips.”  I’m ready to take advantage of the iPad app.  It will let me check things out whether I’m on WiFi or 3G so I’ll never miss a chance to check in on things.

The people at Onlive also eluded to the future power of these apps on their website when they said “… even though you can’t play games yet—no high-end games are programmed for touch-based tablets just yet—you’ll be seeing touch- and motion-aware high-end games in the future.”  I can’t wait!
